By now, those interested in the new iPhone 12 mini probably all know that the phone’s physical size is going to be slightly smaller than the iPhone 8 and slightly bigger than the 1st gen iPhone SE. To me and lots of others, that sounds perfect. Finally, a smaller sized new generation iPhone!

We also all know that, even though the phone is smaller than an iPhone 8, the screen has a larger height, because the device is now all-screen. That’s great. But what about the actual screen width? Is it the iPhone 12 mini screen width smaller than the iPhone 8 screen width?

Lot’s of articles and videos compare either physical phone sizes, resolutions or screen diagonals. But surprisingly, none of them actually talk about the screen width (or height, for that matter). Because of that, I’ve made a quick overview of screen dimensions, calculated from their Pixels-Per-Inch number and resolution:

  • iPhone 8 screen:
    - 750 x 1334 pixels at 326 PPI
    - 2.30 x 4.09 inch
  • iPhone 12 mini screen:
    - 1080 x 2340 pixels at 476 PPI
    - 2.27 x 4.92 inch

All in all we can conclude that the iPhone 12 mini’s screen width is nearly the same as the iPhone 8. Yes, it’s ever so slightly smaller, but the difference of 0.03 inch (or 0.76 mm) is neglectable. Great news for small size iPhone fans!
